Sensoryforms consists of individual and group artworks and one wall installation by the entire class. Each piece considers one or more of the exhibition’s themes: Nature, Gothic, or Music. The themes were brought to life by combining the artist’s interests and imagination about life.
NATURE
Fractured in the Moonlight
Ink swell print
Cleo Birch
Using a script font called Banshee, I compiled mainly a, l, and z letterforms to create the shape of a wolf’s head, which floats in the center of the canvas. More letters were used to slice into the shape, creating a fractured texture. The negative space is raised while the wolf’s head sinks in, inviting people to experience a more mysterious tactile trail.
Bone Dry
Ink swell print
Grace Burski & Ava Moroz
Ava and Grace together created fish inspired by the quiet beauty found in nature. They decided to incorporate both death and under the sea into a visual piece that helps viewers take a new dip into sea life. Each letter is carefully positioned to suggest the rigid outline and suspended posture of a fish that has ceased to swim.
Resilience
Ink swell print
Grace Burski
This bird illustration, built with bold and minimalist strokes, reflects a harmonious fusion of type-inspired forms and nature’s delicate intricacy. The graceful curves mimic feathers, while sharp angles create structure, embodying the quiet resilience of a bird perched in stillness.
Jellyfish Jam
Ink swell print
Jenna Armentrout
I used the Baskerville typeface to create a dreamy underwater scene. A few years ago, I created a jellyfish composition and always wanted to make friends with them, so I took my chance! The piece features a jellyfish, a whale, angelfish, and bass. It also includes some sand dollar patterns made with an &, waves made from the lower curve of a Q, bubbles made from O’s, and kelp made from chains of asterisks. I hope this piece transports you to a world of undersea magic and mystery!
Cold Blood
Ink swell print
Parker Aultman
This is a type and nature based illustration. Using snake scales and letters to create a pattern.
Whale Watching
Ink swell print
Jenna Armentrout & Jake Hamlin
We created a mountain landscape submerged in water and flanked by two portals. Where do they lead? Who knows! Jenna’s whale makes an appearance in the lower left blowing off some steam while a sailboat floats peacefully nearby, its red flag fluttering in the wind. A mountain ridge looms in the background with some pine trees beside two large portals against a partly cloudy sky. Inspired by the flat yet vivid colors of pop art, we brought in bright colors like red, yellow, green, and violet to breathe some life and excitement into the piece. Welcome, and we hope you enjoy all our watery kingdom has to offer!
Liminal Leaf
Ink swell print
Marlee McGuire
This piece explores the interaction between texture, color and text using the simplicity of natural forms to invite reflection. The vibrant orange and deep black symbolize the seasonal cycle of change and contrast evoking themes of growth, decay and renewal.
Untitled
Ink swell print
Charlie Higgins
This tactile illustration, printed on swell paper, transforms two number eights into a fusion of faces and trees, symbolizing the interconnectedness of humanity and nature. Through raised textures and dynamic forms, the piece invites a multi-sensory exploration that bridges the visual and tactile. It challenges conventional boundaries of illustration, offering an inclusive experience that celebrates abstraction, symbolism, and accessibility.
Untitled
Ink swell print
Ava Moroz
This artwork explores the expressive potential of letterforms, transforming them from functional typography into a dynamic, abstract composition. The layering and overlapping of various typefaces and sizes create a sense of movement and rhythm, blurring the line between communication and art. By deconstructing and reimagining familiar characters, the piece invites viewers to see typography not just as language but as a visual medium with limitless creative possibilities.
Untitled
Ink swell print
Charlie Higgins
This tactile illustration, printed on swell paper, centers around the number 4, seamlessly integrated into a composition of abstract trees and geometric forms. The raised textures bring the design to life, inviting both visual and tactile exploration. By merging the structured presence of the number 4 with the organic flow of tree shapes, the piece symbolizes the balance between structure and nature, offering an inclusive, multi-sensory experience that blurs the lines between abstraction and representation.
GOTHIC
Untitled
Ink swell print
Samuel Griebel
This tactile artwork celebrates the intricate beauty of Gothic letterforms, printed on swell paper to create a multi-sensory experience. By highlighting subcategories like Textura, Rotunda, and Fraktur, the piece invites audiences to explore the rich textures and ornate details of this historic style through both sight and touch. The work reimagines typography as a physical, inclusive art form, emphasizing the enduring power of Gothic design to convey complexity and cultural identity.
Intrinsically Disordered
Ink swell print
Austin Lage
This illustration uses adjectives born from self-deprecation, reflecting the internal conflict of reconciling religion and sexuality. These words form the silhouette of a self-portrait, symbolizing this personal struggle. The title and concept are inspired by the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which describes homosexual acts as “intrinsically disordered.”
Untitled
Ink swell print
Madeline Snow
This is a tactile art print with a mixture of gothic style letters in the middle and one z toward the top left corner. Each letter is orange, red, or black, all over an off-white background.
Untitled
Ink swell print
Adrian Keller-Miller
Tactile art print showing a rose with a black stroke that varies in weight and width. The top right of the rose sprouts a cluster of oval-shaped leaves while the bottom left ony sprouts a few.
Ear
Ink swell print
Runzhi Xu
This is a square composition with the word “Ear” spelled out. Each letter varies in size with A being the largest and in the middle. The letters are inline and have serifs. Half of the background is black while the other half is beige with thin black stripes.
Eye
Ink swell print
Runzhi Xu
This is a vertical composition with the word “eye” spelled diagonally on the top right side using art-deco style letters with extreme contrast. Behind the first E, there is a sideways eye shape with a pupil that has a similar look and texture to the inside of an orange. The background has a dried out looking texture, similar to that of the desert.
Talk to Me
Ink swell print
Samuel Griebel, Madeline Snow, Austin Lage
Talk to me is a piece inspired by the movie “Talk to Me”. Our piece is a life size hand made of a wood skeleton frame, surrounded by paper, with gothic letter forms scattered around the hand.
MUSIC
DANCE!
Ink swell print
Cleo Birch & Britney Lopez
Inspired by Charlie Brown and the playful feelings of its popular soundtracks, we used both a blocky font and a schoolhouse-style script font. The tactile script font was used to create the characters Woodstock, Snoopy, and one of the kids in the scene where everyone dances along to Schroeder playing the piano. The flat red text in the background says “DANCE!” and each letter lives up to the energy of that word.
Mac
Ink swell print, Macaroni noodles
Stella Marchese & Sophia Laurel
This letter form-based composition is an ode to the late singer Mac Miller. The curved organic letters spell out Mac, while letter-shaped pasta represents the lyrics from all of his songs and adds a surprising tactile texture to the piece.
Tactile Tune
Ink swell print, Aluminum Foil
Stella Marchese & Sophia Laurel
“Tactile Tune” is crumpled aluminum foil shaped as the symbol “F Sharp” between two horizontal lines representing part of an pentagram. Noise is made when interacting with the foil by pressing down, scratching and rubbing, creating a “Tune.”
The Winding River
Ink swell print
Jake Hamlin
A vibrant digital illustration featuring abstract shapes and patterns in a rich, warm color palette of reds, oranges, and yellows, accented with cooler tones of blue and green. The composition is layered and dynamic, blending organic curves with sharp geometric forms to create a sense of movement and energy.
Cypress Hill
Ink swell print
Britney Lopez
This tactile illustration merges typography and imagery to evoke the mysterious and dynamic essence of the sea. Printed on swell paper, the piece features bold letters spelling “Cypress Hill,” set against flowing waves, a skull, and scattered letterforms on the sea floor. The raised textures invite tactile exploration, transforming visual elements into a multi-sensory experience. By blending symbolism, abstraction, and accessibility, the artwork reimagines the ocean as a space of depth, mystery, and discovery, where language and form converge to tell a layered story.
